POLICE have increased patrols in Fareham town centre after a woman was raped on a footbridge near the town's railway station.
Officers say the victim was attacked between 1.20am and 2.05am last Saturday on the footbridge that crosses Western Way.
The victim had left the Slug and Lettuce and was walking along West Street when she was approached by a man she did not know. He then threatened and attacked her.
Fareham police carried out hi-vis patrols in the town last night.
One officer tweeted: "I've helped lone female who was a bit worse for where get picked up by her husband; helped a young man who drank far more than he could handle be collected by his dad and also spoken to an number of lone females in various parts of the town, providing reassurance and giving crime prevention advice."
The victim's assailant is described as white, aged between 20s & 40s, 5ft 11in, slim. e had a full beard that was blond/grey in colour, and medium length hair.
