AMBITIOUS proposals to transform Southampton's transport network over the next three years have been given the go-ahead by the city council.

The authority has approved a new implementation plan that sets out moves to support the Solent Freeport scheme as well as helping people move around the area more easily.

It aims to fund transport projects and infrastructure improvements in a bid to "Get Southampton Moving".

Proposals include a business case for upgrading the Northam rail bridge and apps to help people plan their journeys and book tickets, whether it be for buses, e-scooters or trains.

As reported, the existing structure could be replaced by a dual carriageway bridge.

Other proposals include investment in Southampton’s district centres and the continued delivery of Active Travel Zones, which create safe streets for walking and cycling.

Cllr Jeremy Moulton, deputy leader of the council and cabinet member for growth, said: "Our vision to create an attractive and vibrant city is already taking shape."

Cllr Moulton cited proposed improvements to the Bedford Place area and "high-quality" public spaces connected to the Bargate Quarter, Hanover Square and the area around Holyrood.

The plan follows the publication last year of proposals to cut traffic congestion by creating a mass transit system and making more use of Southampton Water by introducing water taxis.

Royston Smith, Tory MP for Southampton Itchen, described the new document as "ambitious and transformational".

He added: "It's great to see huge investment going into the roads and pavements and we are starting now to really see the difference. The new public squares by the Bargate and at Albion Place will look amazing.

"Longer-term plans for a metro level of local rail services from our eight city stations and water taxis on the Itchen and Southampton Water are really exciting."

But Cllr Satvir Kaur, leader of the Labour opposition group, referred to "Tory rhetoric and un-costed plans".

She added: "Labour would want to ask local communities what works for them, to better all travel options easier, safer and more affordable.”
