AN INVESTIGATION has been launched after a viral video showed food stacked up in a disabled loo at a restaurant in Winchester.

The footage of uncooked meat, vegetables and fruit was taken by a customer using the toilet at the Wagamama in Jewry Street.

Customer Harriet Betts uploaded the clip last weekend, saying: “I never usually share things like this but this is disgusting!”

However, the restaurant has now said that it has launched an investigation and has apologised.

It said the food had been delivered during a busy lunchtime and had been left in an incorrect place by the driver.

A Wagamama spokesperson said: “An investigation has been launched after a supplier delivered food products during a busy lunchtime service and incorrectly left them in an accessible toilet. This was soon discovered and all the food was immediately disposed of.

“There is no suggestion that this is anything other than a regrettable isolated incident of human error but nevertheless will be thoroughly reviewed to discover how this happened. Winchester Wagamama has a five-star food rating and prides itself on exceptionally high standards, food storage and preparation and would like to apologise for this incident”.

Ms Betts, from Whiteley, said she raised it with a manager as she was concerned about the way the food was being stored and the lack of access to the disabled toilet.

With 80,000 views, the post quickly drew the attention of Winchester City Council and Wagamama’s head office as well as 1,000 comments.

A council officer visited the restaurant and spoke to staff about the storage issue. In a statement, it said: “The council has found that there were some areas requiring improvement at a Winchester restaurant and these have been addressed.

"We have conducted a priority investigation and inspection of the premises.

"We are working with the business to ensure correct practices are adhered to.”

The Winchester branch has a 4.5 star rating on Google reviews and a five-star food hygiene rating, which is classed as ‘very good’.
