POLICE have been ramping up efforts to combat motorbike crime in Southampton.

Officers sprang into action to tackle youths on motorbikes in the west of the city over the weekend.

During one incident, police rammed a moped when the rider refused to stop near Southampton Common.

The rider fled the scene but was caught after being chased on foot.

In a second incident, police seized two stolen mopeds and stopped two teenagers who had run into Lordswood woods.

Police have described Sunday as a "day of action" to tackle motorbike-related crime and anti-social behaviour.

They said that it was organised due to a number of incidents over the years.

Police added that they are "always looking at new and innovative ways to disrupt those responsible and recover stolen vehicles".

For years, Southampton has been plagued by youths on motorbikes "running riot and getting away with it”.

This includes vehicles tearing across graves in Hollybrook Cemetery as well as footpaths in the Lordswood area.

Earlier this month, police reported three men, who "appeared to be holding machetes", riding on International Way.

Commenting on the recent operations, Inspector Sarah Nicholson from Southampton West’s Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “We know the impact motorbike-related crime and anti-social behaviour has on residents in Southampton, particularly in the west of the city, which is why we organised this day of action – allowing us to draw on extra resources in force for added impact.

“It is just one high-profile example of the work we do day in, day out to recover stolen vehicles, reduce anti-social behaviour associated with motorbikes and mopeds, and bring those responsible to justice.

“Your reports help make days like this possible, giving us the vital information we need to get officers in the right place at the right time, so thank you for supporting us and please continue to tell us about the issues in your neighbourhoods.”

Officers have stressed that it is vital for residents to report incidents as it helps them "build a more accurate picture" of the issues.
