TRAVELLERS have set up camp in an Eastleigh skate park.

The encampment at Freespace Skate Park off Chesnut Avenue currently consists of 12 caravans and around 24 other vehicles.

Council officers from Eastleigh Borough Council have visited the encampment to request that the travellers leave the site.

The situation is being monitored, according to the council.

Police say they are aware of the unauthorised encampment.

The travellers arrived at the site yesterday evening, May 2, and it is believed they cut down the fence to gain access.

In 2020, the council proposed the idea of using earth mounds and more than 20 metal and plastic bollards to prevent illegal encampments in the borough.

This proposal was aimed at The Lakeside Estate, which, as of 2020, had a large area of open space with "several unsecured access points."

It was later decided by councillors that £12,000 would be used towards this project and the amount was allocated from developers’ contributions.
