TWO investigations are now taking place after a “horrifying” pigeon cull at a Southampton hospital.

As reported, rescuers from Southampton’s Happy Animals Rescue & Rehab discovered the aftermath of the cull at the Royal South Hants Hospital off Brintons Terrace.

Contractors had planned to scare the birds that were occupying a disused rotunda and block any holes so they could not re-enter.

But Denise Theophilus from the Foundation of Feathered Friends said rescuers were later met with “indescribable scenes of carnage”.

Adult birds reportedly had their necks wrung and limbs and wings torn out.

Meanwhile, five baby birds are said to have been plucked from their nests and battered to death with bricks.

Now the NHS has said it will launch a full enquiry into the incident after staff said they were “deeply concerned”.

Trish Stephenson, chief operating officer of NHS Property Services said: “Our Pest Control Services Provider has appointed NPTA (National Pest Technicians Association) to carry out a full and independent investigation which will include a comprehensive review of method statements and legislative compliance.

“NHSPS is also conducting its own internal review.”

She went on to say that she would share the findings once the investigation is concluded and that the NHS takes this case “very seriously”.

Police attended the scene after a report from the public relating to possible wildlife crimes and an investigation was conducted by CountryWatch officers.

It was decided though that no criminal offences had been committed.

Denise said the rescuers who attended the grisly scene were deeply affected by the incident.

“The two rescuers were allowed to walk into the most traumatic scenes they have ever witnessed," she said.

"These are kind people who rehab injured and sick birds and animals voluntarily.”
