The much-anticipated Red Arrows flypast above Southampton has been called off due to bad weather.

The lack of visibility is preventing the aircraft from taking to the skies.

All afternoon displays have been cancelled as a result, organisers have confirmed.

The Red Arrows had been due to soar above Southampton docks at 4.35pm - just minutes after taking off from Exeter.

The announcement comes after this morning's displays in Torbay and Chinook were also cancelled due to low clouds.

In a series of tweets, a spokesperson for the English Riviera Airshow said "there simply isn't the visibility required" for the aircraft to fly safely.

They added: "We really wanted to bring you some flying today and have had dedicated teams paying very close attention to the conditions in order to find a gap in the weather to be able to do so, but sadly it just hasn't been possible."

Despite the disappointing news, hundreds of people have flocked to Mayflower Park for the Big Platinum Festival.

Street parties and tea parties are still being held across the city.
