CAMPAIGNERS fighting plans to build almost 200 homes say the scheme would devour a "huge" area of countryside rich in wildlife.
Critics claim the proposed development north of Cooks Lane, Calmore, would also create extra traffic problems as well as placing strain on schools and health facilities.
A third of the proposed new homes would be affordable - but the district council has so far received more than 30 letters of objection.
Protesters include Totton and Eling Town Council, which says people already living in the area will be "surrounded" by new housing if the scheme is approved.
It also claims Pauletts Lane would be unable to cope with the increase in traffic.
Other objectors include Totton councillor Arthur Davis, of Filton Close, Calmore, whose letter to the district council accuses the applicants of ignoring the concerns of locals.
The proposed site is in a largely rural area often referred to as Old Calmore.
Shirley Lester, of Cooks Lane, says the proposed development would "totally take away" the countryside. Neil Abrahams, of Friars Croft, Totton, also cites the loss of green space and says the increase in traffic would turn Pauletts Lane into a death trap.

Simon Owen, of Cooks Lane, claims the scheme "would be a disaster for local residents and road users".
Other protesters say it would turn a largely rural part of Calmore into a semi-urban area. They also fear the potential impact on wildlife, including foxes, birds and deer.
Merlion Capital Corporation is seeking consent to build 196 homes on fields between Cooks Lane and land south of the A36.
Its application describes the scheme as a well-designed and landscape-led development that would deliver a carefully considered extension to an existing urban area.
An accompanying transport assessment says the proposals "accord with the national and local planning policies relevant to the application".
Several people have written to the district council to support the proposals.
Ian Travers, of Cooks Lane, says: "There is a need for affordable housing, which this scheme will provide. It does not feel dense and fits in with Totton."
Lance McArdell, of Minstead, adds: "This development will enable affordable housing for local families."
