TWO gang members inspected a knife for blood stains moments after a brutal attack which claimed the life of a Southampton teenager, a court heard.
Sercan Calik scoured the 10cm flick knife to try and find out whether 18-year-old Lewis Singleton had been stabbed during a brawl, Winchester Crown Court heard.
The 19-year-old told jurors he was unable to close the knife and had to ask his co-defendant Rikki Johnson to show him how the mechanism worked.
Calik, along with Johnson and two youths who cannot be named for legal reasons, is accused of murdering Lewis on Obelisk Road, Woolston, in March last year.
Calik told the court: "First I looked at it (the knife) and then it was locked. I tried to shut it and fold it but it would not and I asked Rikki how to shut it.
He told jurors he only briefly left his car while the fatal incident was taking place.
He added: "When I got out of the car, I looked at the fight and I could see a bunch of guys around Lewis.
"I looked across to my right and Craig Smith was right at the end of the road. He was just shouting leave him alone' and all that.
He said he saw his co-defendant Rikki Johnson "punching" Lewis Singleton but then got back into his vehicle.
Lewis died from five stab wounds.
Calik, 19, of Burgess Road, Johnson, 19, of Honeysuckle Road, Bassett, and two youths aged 16 and 17 all deny murder and a second charge of violent disorder.
A fifth member of the gang was never charged.
Proceeding.
