CONCERNS have been raised after a man was spotted "dangling his legs" off the edge of Southampton's tallest building.

Measuring at 89m high, the Centenary Quay development in Woolston is the tallest building in the city.

But that did not stop one thrill-seeker, who was seen by residents in Ocean Village perched on top of the under-construction 27-storey apartment complex.

The man was seen sitting on top of the building with his legs dangling over the side while playing on his phone on Wednesday night.

He has been branded "dangerous and selfish" by one Southampton MP who condemned the extreme climbing act.

Southampton Itchen MP Royston Smith said: "This so-called sport or pastime is both selfish and dangerous. 

"Not only are they putting themselves at risk, they are also putting our emergency services in an awful position. 

"Should the stunt go wrong, someone has to pick up the pieces."

Resident Michael Fesemeyer said he spotted someone moving on top of the building and was able to capture a photo.

He said: "At first we thought he might be about to jump but after looking through our high powered scope set up to see cruise ships, we saw he was sitting dangling his legs over the side playing with his mobile phone and camera filming himself.

"We called the police who asked if we could give the postcode of the building and we said no.

"Incredibly they asked if we could give a description which we could due to the high-powered scope we had we could.

"Needless to say, we never saw the police turn up."

Hampshire Constabulary has confirmed that they were called at 9.33pm concerning the man.

A spokesperson said: "We were called at 9.33pm, enquiries were made and CCTV reviewed and the man was not felt to be acting suspiciously and left shortly after the call came in.

"Officers were initially attending, but they had to be diverted to another incident taking place.

"All calls into our control room are risk assessed and decisions taken on where officers are most required."
