PLANS for 20mph zones across Southampton have sparked mixed views on the proposals.

Connecting Southampton is consulting on 23 areas that are being considered for new 20mph limits.

One sceptic is Jamie Piper, 24, a sales consultant at David Lloyd gym in Southampton.

He said: “I think it (the speed limit moving to 20mph) will be a nightmare if they do change it.

"With all the one-way systems already in place in Southampton it’s not the easiest place to drive as it is, so with a lower speed limit, 10-minute journeys are going to take an hour.

“I used to live in Brighton, and they did a similar thing. It just made getting in and out of the city so slow.

“With the rising cost of fuel and journeys taking longer I can see more people leaning towards public transport and coming from someone, who has taken a lot of buses recently, I can say that the public transport in Southampton will not be able to cope.”

Cameras will not be installed in any new 20mph zones.

Dog-walker Debbie Bareham, 42, from Lordswood, said new limits 'will still help'.

Ms Bareham said: “I can see both sides. I drive for a living, picking up dogs, but at the same time, I do have young kids so the roads should be safer.

“If the limit is 30, most people will be going at 40. So if it is 20, most people will be going at 30. It will still help.”

Nurse Wojciech Wojkowski, 42, of Basset, said: “It is a good thing because people drive around like lunatics.

"I am in London sometimes for work and it is the same in Southampton as it is there.”

He added: “I don’t drive. I ride an electric bike, so it really won’t affect me. It only goes up to 15 anyway.”

Roads under consideration for 20mph limits include: Glen Eyre Road, Manor Farm Road, The Polygon, Fitzhugh Street, Bedford Place, Anglesea Road, Whitworth Crescent, Whitworth Road, Harcourt Road, Macnaghten Road, Oaktree Road, St Catherine’s Road and Diamond Road.

More consultations will be carried out next year for other areas.

Next year will see more roads in Southampton have 20mph consultations.
