SHOPPERS in Southampton are being urged to shop local to support National Independents’ Day this weekend.
In a bid to help family-run businesses in the city get through the impact of the pandemic, the Daily Echo has partnered up with GO! Southampton to feature shops which make Southampton unique.
As families come out to enjoy the weekend this Saturday and Sunday, the message is clear - show your support for the independents.
Stephen Manion, Executive Director the city's Business Improvement District (BID), said: “GO! Southampton proudly represents more than 160 independent businesses in the city.
"From must-visit restaurants such as Mango Thai Tapas, Kuti’s Brasserie, and Ottoman Kitchen, to family-run retail stores which have become a staple part of Southampton heritage, such as award-winning shoe shop W.J. French & Sons in Bedford Place, which has served the city since 1803.
“Without your vital support, we could lose these important businesses, and our High Street could look like a very different place.
“They each come with that community-driven warm welcome and personal touch which makes for a better shopping experience and keeps bringing visitors to our wonderful city.”
He added: “We are also pleased to offer Southampton’s businesses support throughout the year, from recruitment and staff training to photography and marketing.”
Among the businesses featured in the Echo this week are Stakks Pancake House, a popular eatery conjuring up delicious treats, Mediterranean restaurant Artsy Lounge, historic shoe shop WJ French & Son, which has been running for eight generations, and bookshop October Books.
The city has seen a number of new independent businesses open in the last six months, which goes to show just how attractive Southampton is for people looking to invest in a new venture.
New independent businesses that have opened their doors recently include The Bok Shop in Westquay South, Gin & Olive and Blue’s Smokehouse in Guildhall Square as well as Pam Pam and Tropic Bar on Oxford Street.
