AS we find ourselves basking in the glorious sunshine of another heatwave, the Echo looks back at a warm spell from the past.

The heatwave of 1975 is often overshadowed by the exceptionally long and blazingly hot summer just a year later.

But 1975 was certainly no slouch and it came out of nowhere – almost as quick as it went again.

The beginning of June was extraordinarily cold. In fact, there were frosts and even snow across much of the UK.

The weather suddenly changed on June 4, and temperatures reached into the high 20s. This lasted all the way through until June 14.

Rain and cold weather hampered plans until June 20 when the mercury hit the high 20s once again

But there was still a dramatic twist to come.

By the end of the month, the temperature plummeted so much that some places in the UK even experienced ground frost towards the end of the month.
