A WOMAN has been taken to hospital after falling into the River Itchen from a bridge.
Police were called to the Itchen Bridge following reports that a woman had fallen from the bridge at 11.54am on Wednesday.
The woman was helped from the water and was taken to Southampton General Hospital for treatment.
One onlooker said: "I work on the opposite side of the river to where it was all happening.
"The air ambulance was hovering, and there were two ambulances, a paramedic, and three police cars at the rowing club on the water’s edge by Itchen Imperial Rowing Club."
A police car was spotted on the bridge at around 12.15pm and remained on the scene until just after 12.30pm.
One officer was seen on the bridge and the road remained open.
A spokesperson from the force said: "We were called at 11.54am today (13 July) to a report that a woman had entered the water from the Itchen Bridge in Southampton.
"The woman was helped from the water and she has been taken to Southampton General Hospital for treatment."
