POLICE in Hampshire have pleaded with the public to only use 999 in genuine emergencies amid "unprecedented" levels of demand.

Hampshire Constabulary took to social media to ask people to contact them in different ways if they are not reporting a serious incident or a risk to life or property.

Speaking in a video posted on Facebook, superintendent Anna Skelton said the police are facing "exceptionally high demand".

The superintendent is head of the forces' control room and contact centre in Hampshire.

She said: "Over the last few weeks, we've experienced exceptionally high demand, especially on our 999 services.

"It's the summer, so of course we expect it to be busy, and we plan for that, but what we've seen has been unprecedented.

"Therefore, I urge you please, only dial 999 if it is a genuine emergency, such as a serious incident in progress of risk to life or property."

Fire services and hospitals have also faced increased pressures in recent weeks.

Superintendent Skelton added: "For all other matters, or to make an enquiry, please use our online service if you're able to.

"On our website you can report a crime, or get an update on an existing case, as well as a number of other services. You can also dial 101 for non-emergency matters.

"By adhering to this advice, you are going to help us protect the public and be there for those who need us the most. So thank you."
