PLANNERS have received another application to build a large number of homes on rural land between Totton and the M27 motorway.
Bargate Homes and VIVID Housing are seeking consent to construct 60 flats and houses on land near the junction of Hill Street and Salisbury Road.
The applicants say 35 per cent of the properties will be affordable.
New Forest District Council has already approved an outline application by Bloor Homes to build up to 280 dwellings on a neighbouring site.
Earlier this year Merlion Capital Corporation submitted plans for 196 homes on land north of nearby Cooks Lane.
One of the objectors to the latest application claims the proposed access points contravene NFDC guidelines, which state that the character of the area must be maintained.
Their letter to the authority says: "The access points will generate far more traffic than Hill Street can handle, regardless of suggested changes to the layout.
"The excess traffic will create risks to highway safety. Salisbury Road would provide a much safer and more manageable access point, whilst protecting the nature and character of Hill Street."
But the application says: "Land west of Hill Street is in a sustainable location and is suitable for residential development.
"It lies on the northern fringe of the main Totton settlement, is well-contained and separated from the wider countryside to the north by the M27 and to the west by the A326 Totton Bypass.
"A development in this location does not bring about any implications for the wider setting of the New Forest National Park to the west, nor the Testwood Lakes to the east.
"The development will deliver a range of economic, social and environmental benefits for the local community including the provision of much-needed housing within a sustainable and attractive location."
The application says the scheme will include extensive landscaping and new public open space, plus footways and cycleways linking the development with the A36 and the surrounding area.
It adds: "The design positively contributes to the growing development of Totton and the New Forest.
"The scheme will provide 60 new dwellings and public green space arranged to harmoniously interact with the surrounding environment.
"The proposed site is to be accessed via Hill Street itself - with minimal interference with the existing trees and infrastructure."
