THE AGONISING wait was over for thousands of students who collected their GCSE results on Thursday.
Schools in and around Southampton celebrated the results from exams which were the first to be held in-person since 2019.
'Superb results'
Spirits were high at The Gregg School thanks to an impressive set of results.
A total of 98 per cent of students from the independent school in Cutbush Lane achieved five or more Grade 4s and above – an increase on their 2019 results.
Rhianna Best, 16, achieved two nine grades in total, which is equivalent to A*.
She said: “I didn’t expect these results at all. I am very, very shocked.”
Fellow student Ash Board said: “I am very happy with my results. I have had a difficult year so I am happy with what I have come out with.”

Headteacher Sheri Sellers said: “This year group have worked particularly hard, especially with their online lessons, alongside a team of staff who have been utterly dedicated in enabling every student to achieve their best.
“We are really excited by this superb set of results for our mixed ability cohort and I am a very humbled and extremely happy headteacher.”
'Really happy'
There were lots of happy faces in Harefield as Woodlands Community College students opened their results.
Twins Sapphire and Jorja Renouf, 16, passed all of their exams and are both going on to study Animal Management at Sparsholt College.
Sapphire said: “I got a 7 in English Language and a 6 in English Literature and that’s what I’m really happy about. “
Jorja added: “History is my favourite subject so I wanted to do well and I got a 7, so I’m really happy.”
Jasmit Singh achieved all Grade 9s and three Distinction Stars.
The 16-year-old said: “I am very happy with my results, it was quite unexpected.”

Young adults elsewhere in Southampton and Hampshire also celebrated their results.
The pass rate for this year's GCSEs in England, Wales and Northern Ireland has fallen since 2021, but remains higher than 2019.
St George Catholic College
A massive congratulations must go to St George for achieving their best ever GCSE results.
- 86 per cent achieved grades 9-4 in English and Maths.
- 73 per cent achieved grades 9-5 in English and Maths.
Headteacher Mr James Habberley said: "The results represent a huge milestone in our recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic and are testament to the hard work, positive attitude and resilience of the Class of 2022 and our amazing staff."
Bitterne Park School
70 per cent of Year 11 students achieving a standard pass (Grade 9-4) and 44 per cent achieving a strong pass (9-5) in both English and Mathematics.
Stewart Roderick, headteacher, said ‘We are exceptionally proud of all our students and are delighted that the hard work and determination shown by our Year 11 students has resulted in the impressive results that they have achieved.
The Hamble School
The results for The Hamble School are as follows: 64 per cent of students achieving five GCSE passes (including Maths and English) at grades 9-4; 70 per cent of students achieving grades 9-4 in English and Maths; 82 per cent of students achieving grades 9-4 in English; 72 per cent of students achieving grades 9-4 in Maths.
A spokesperson from the school said: "All of us at The Hamble School would like to thank the parents and carers who have worked with us so supportively over the past 5 years- undoubtedly, this has made a huge contribution to the success of these young people.
"We wish them every success in the future."
Wyvern College
Wyvern College in Fair Oak is celebrating its best ever GCSE exam results.
Pass rates for good grades (4-9) and strong grades (5-9) have increased from the previous college record from 2019 when exams were last sat.

On average, both girls and boys achieved 8 GCSE passes with an average grade of 5.4.
Headteacher, Ben Rule said: “GCSE results day is always a special occasion, but it feels particularly so this year for a year group of students who have faced such disruption to their education.
"To their immense credit, they have overcome these challenges; their excellent results are especially hard won, and we are very proud of them."
Oasis Academy Mayfield
Student Connor Scott secured a number of fantastic results, including an 8 and a 9 in Maths and English, as well as a 9 in English Literature and Physics.
He said: "I am absolutely amazed at how outstanding my results are – I cannot believe it."
Fellow student Rebecca French achieved an 8 and a 9 in Maths and English.
She said: "I’m proud of myself and what I have achieved – all the hard work paid off. I cannot thank my teachers enough for their ongoing support – including outside of school hours."
Headteacher Claire Taylor said: "We are thrilled for our young people who have worked so hard for these results."
Oasis Academy Lordshill
Benjamin Bond, headteacher, said: “We are extremely proud of our young people who have worked so hard for these results.
"I am excited to see what our students go on to do next and very much look forward to hearing about their success in the future.
"At Oasis Academy Lord’s Hill, we are passionate about giving our students the opportunities to achieve and I would like to thank our families and our staff who have supported them throughout their time with us."
Oasis Academy Sholing
The Pallot triplets, Piper, Abby and Jesse achieved 19 grade 9s between them.
All of them are going on to study Biology, Chemistry and Maths at A-level.
Headteacher Martin Brown said: "The challenges that individuals and communities have faced over the past two years has been immense.
"It is with the hard work and dedication of students and staff that the results have increased since 2019."
Noadswood School
At Noadswood, 72 per cent of students secured the standard pass in English and Maths (4-9), 53 per cent secured the strong pass in English and Maths (5-9), 23 per cent of students gained grades 7-9 in English and 21 per cent of students gained grades 7-9 in Maths
The school also achieved 85x level 9 grades/Level 2 Distinction grades across a range of subjects.
Headteacher Kathryn Marshall said: ‘It's awesome celebrating with the class of 2022 today, who’ve shown a level of determination most have never had to show, sitting formal exams again after such the greatest disruption.
"They’ve made all of us so proud today in subjects right across our curriculum."
