A MAN wielding a machete launched an attack on residents after he attempted to steal two puppies, say police.
Armed response officers and a police helicopter were called following a violent attack in the Davis Field area of New Milton.
A man, who was believed to be armed with a machete, was reportedly in the area with the intention of stealing two puppies from a front garden.
When challenged by the homeowner and a neighbour, the suspect hit out at the homeowner with the blade just before 9pm on Thursday.

The injured man was treated by paramedics for injuries that were not life-threatening.
However, when police arrived at the scene, the suspect had left the location.
The suspect had at the time been identified by witnesses and has since been verified by CCTV cited at the attack address.
The male is said to be well known to police and enquiries are at this time be carried out in order to arrest him for the attack.
Witnesses with any information that could help police with their enquiries are urged to call the county force on 101.
