A WOMAN walked through the streets of her village playing the bagpipes after the death of Queen Elizabeth.

Carol Knights, 55, headed out into Hamble on Thursday evening after the news broke of the Sovereign's death.

The Hamble resident said that she had been talking about the Queen's health earlier that day, and that she wanted to do something to mark the passing when the time came.

But just hours later, when the Queen's death was announced, she put that idea into practice, filling the village streets with her music

Several people filmed the moment and posted it on social media, describing it as "poignant".

Carol said: "It was a spur-of-the-moment thing. I was on my way to practice.

"I knew the Queen loved the bagpipes. So I came home and got dressed and decided to walk around the streets of Hamble."

A lot of people came to their doors. All along the way, I could see people recording."

She spent about an hour and a quarter playing the bagpipes, an instrument she started playing just five years ago.

One onlooker, Vick Irwin, said: "I could hear her in the distance and I went to the front door and managed to get [a photo of] her.

"Because the weather was so grotty and it was twilight it was really atmospheric and poignant.

"Good on her for doing it. It was a perfect tribute".

Carol played a selection of songs, including Amazing Grace and one song which was previously played at the funeral of the Queen Mother.

Carol added: "People had just got the news and they didn't know how to feel.

"It gave people something to focus on. I'm just pleased that I kind of managed to do something that captured the moment.

"I think we have to respect the fact that the Queen devoted her entire adult life to the service of others. She did that with dignity, grace and humour."
