“AS ONE era ends, another begins.”
These are the words of Southampton City Council Leader Satvir Kaur after King Charles III was proclaimed as monarch.
Queen Elizabeth reigned for 70-years until her death on Thursday, September 8.
Her eldest son Charles is successor to the throne and was proclaimed King in an official ceremony at St James's Palace on Saturday and in Southampton on Sunday.
'We are in safe hands'
City leaders have since paid their respects to the Queen and shared their thoughts on the new monarch.
Satvir Kaur said: “I am sure King Charles will serve the people with the same unwavering devotion as we saw from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
“God save the King."
Conservative MP for Southampton Itchen, Royston Smith is certain we are in “safe hands.”
He said: “His Majesty, King Charles III has, like his mother before him, dedicated his life to the service of the British people and those of the wider Commonwealth.
“We have lost a figurehead like no other in history, but we know we are in safe hands with our new monarch, King Charles.
“God Save The King.”
'I wish him luck'
Alan Whitehead, Labour MP for Southampton Test, said: “Charles as Prince has been the longest serving Heir Apparent in any monarchy anywhere and he has done an enormous amount of food work in that role.
“Even though he is ascending to the throne relatively late in life, all that experience will put him in good stead to continue that work and follow in his mothers’ footsteps.

Southampton City Council is in the process of organising a special remembrance service for the Queen, which is set to take place before her funeral.
