A cyclist has been seriously injured during a hit-and-run in Southampton earlier today.
The man in his 30s was riding an electric bike on Neva Road when he was struck by a silver Volkswagen Golf at around 6.30am.
Witness Nathan Burton, 27, was cycling to work when he heard the car hit the cyclist.
Speaking of the moment before the crash, he said: “I went up the hill and then it suddenly turned right without slowing down into the entrance of the car park by Glamour Works.
“As he did that, the gentleman who was coming from the opposite direction to me was hit, and all I heard was the car thud the guy off the bike.
“I remember hearing a grinding sound as he was hit.”
Nathan when to aid the cyclist as the car took off.
He said: “[The victim] went from being in front of the car to then being on the side of the car as it reversed.
“It was my first time experiencing something like this, I was just in shock, I didn’t know what to do.
“Three people pulled up and asked me what had happened and to check on the victim but then told me they had to work.”
After calling 999, Nathan stayed with the cyclist until the paramedics arrived.
In a statement, a police spokesperson said: “We were called at around 6.30 this morning [14 September] with reports of a collision involving a silver Volkswagen Polo and a cyclist on Neva Road, Southampton.
“The cyclist, a man aged in his 30s, suffered serious injuries and has been taken to hospital.”
Police said the car did not remain at the scene and no arrests have been made so far.
Enquiries are ongoing.
