THE Itchen Navigation waterway between Southampton and Winchester was completed in 1710 to enable the transportation of coal and other goods on barges that could not use the nearby River Itchen. The arrival of the London and Southampton Railway in 1839 led to a downturn in use, and the Navigation was last used by a barge in 1869.
