LARGE parts of Southampton have been plunged into chaos this afternoon after a power cut struck across the city during rush hour.
Traffic lights are reported to have failed in the city centre and almost 200 residential properties across Bannister Park, Polygon, Bar Gate, Bedford Place, Southampton and Southampton central have been affected.
WestQuay and a number of commercial addresses were also plunged into darkness at approximately 4.45pm today.
Engineers are currently investigating the power cut and are hoping to have power back on in the next two or three hours.
A spokesman for Southern Electric said: "We want to apologise to the central parts of Southampton. We are still in the process of putting this right and are trying to re-route the electricity around the network. We are doing everything we can. If people want to contact us they can ring the emergency number. We are confident we will have the power restored quickly."
