DETECTIVES investigating a savage attack that left a 42-year-old Hampshire man in intensive care are this morning continuing to question a second man over the assault.

Police have now made two arrests on suspicion of attempted murder and assault occasioning grievous bodily harm, since the victim was discovered lying unconscious on a pavement at 5pm on Saturday afternoon.

The man had suffered "very serious injuries" in the attack outside the Red Lion Pub in West Street, Portchester, Fareham.

He is being cared for at Southampton General Hospital.

Police last night arrested a 41-year-old man from Portsmouth in connection with the incident, who is still being questioned today.

Officers have released a 30-year-old Portsmouth man on police bail until July 7.

Detectives are still appealing for anyone with information about the attack to come forward.

The victim had been drinking in the Red Lion before he sustained his injuries, but police do not believe there was any incident inside the pub.
