DOZENS of motorists have voiced their opposition to council plans to install 30 traffic lights on a Southampton roundabout.
However, the controversial plans have found favour with many pedestrians and cyclists who have given the scheme the thumbs-up.
As reported in yesterday's Daily Echo, Southampton City Council is to introduce ten traffic lights on Millbrook roundabout, with two lights each at five different points.
In addition ten toucan crossings, each with two traffic lights, are to be installed at the roundabout's five approaches and exits for pedestrians and cyclists.
Work will begin on Monday and will also see roads resurfaced and new pedestrian and cycle paths introduced during four months of delays, traffic diversions and speed restrictions.
Edwina Rankin, manageress of Oliver's Fish and Chip Shop in Wimpson Lane, Millbrook, said: "I think introducing all these lights will be a bad idea. There is enough traffic chaos as it is.
"It can be difficult getting on to the roundabout at 5pm but the rest of the day it's not too bad."
Scott Sennett, 35, a scaffolder from Southampton, said he was in favour of the traffic lights, especially as he often drives in and out of the docks.
"It can be difficult coming out from the docks but I think 30 lights is a bit excessive."
Joe Durrant, 24, a roofer of Regent's Park, Southampton, who is learning to drive, welcomed the plans for the roundabout.
"It's a scary roundabout and can be difficult to get on. As a pedestrian it can be very dangerous crossing and it's all about timing.
"It will be good to have proper crossings."
A three-week public consultation was carried out into the £2m scheme earlier this year
