WITHOUT them tea would not be served, patients would be lost and more importantly vital equipment would not have been paid for.
For 25 years the army of volunteers known as the League of Friends at Southampton General Hospital have been ensuring things run smoothly for visitors and patients, while spearhead vital fundraisers in their spare time.
The dedicated volunteers at Southampton Hospital's Eye Unit celebrated 25 years of service with cake and a toast at their annual general meeting.
Chairman Alan Finch said: "The League continues to be well served by a splendid band of volunteers, members and other supporters and we are as proud as ever to be associated with the Eye Unit and the excellent treatment and care provided to patients."
At the time of the League's formation, patients received treatment at the Eye Hospital in Wilton Road near the city centre.
A small band of loyal volunteers introduced a trolley service and in their first year, funded the purchase of just over £400 worth of hospital equipment.
In 2007, a record breaking £88,600, fundraised by the League, was spent on hospital equipment and improvements to amenities.
When the Eye Hospital closed in 1994, the facilities were relocated to the General Hospital where the league took over the purpose-made tea bar.
To this day, volunteers are on hand to offer patients refreshments and to run a guide escort service.
