A 26-year-old man is today being quizzed by detectives over the rape of a girl after she left a Southampton nightspot.

The woman had been at the Grosvenor Casino in Leisureworld before she left and walked along West Quay Road in the early hours of January 26.

She then took a short cut through the car park of the De Vere hotel where it is known that a man had pulled in and got out of his car.

Police launched a major appeal to find the driver, releasing CCTV images of his car. The area is busy when late bars and clubs close and also has a burger van which is busy with customers making their way home.

Officers based at Bitterne CID arrested the man on Wednesday and applied successfully to magistrates to extend their time for questioning which expires late tonight.
