PLANS to turn public open space in a Southampton street into 24 parking spaces have been given the go-ahead.
The city council has given itself planning permission to carry out the work at Honister Close to ease the parking shortage and stop drivers using grass verges in the Millbrook area.
The application referred to two blocks of flats built in the 1960s.
"Car ownership was at a much lower level and the buildings were constructed with no parking provided," it said.
"In 1985 a planning application for a car park was submitted but refused.
"Over the years residents have had to find parking elsewhere or have chosen to park on grass verges, causing significant damage to the grass.
"For the most part, the housing department has ‘turned a blind eye’ to this in recognition that there is no parking in this vicinity and that residents need to park somewhere.
"Residents have made requests to the council, via Shirley Local Housing Office, over a number of years to provide parking in this location."
A report produced by council planning officers added: "Twenty four spaces are proposed, including two disabled spaces, and four bike stands.
"The proposals will benefit the wider community, not just residents of Honister Close.
"Parking on grass verges contributes to the area feeling run-down and uncared for. The grass has been worn away, leaving muddy verges.
"The proposed improvements will create a high-quality landscape which will create better perceptions of the area by residents and visitors."
