They all thought they would spend their last days there.

Comfortably settled in their flats, where behind every door is a friend and family live only minutes away.

But now more than 30 pensioners could face eviction as their much loved home is considered for demolition.

With the constant black cloud of worry hanging over their heads, the 32 elderly residents of Roxburgh House in Locks Heath, have vowed to fight to save their home.

Uncertainty over the future of Roxburgh House in Saint Michael's Road began two years ago when Hampshire Voluntary Housing Association (HVHA), launched a review into the sheltered accommodation.

Lack of demand for bedsits and the need for social housing led to the review, which could see the building demolished and rebuilt as affordable homes.

This has angered and upset all of the residents living there who have all sold their homes to move to a place where they could remain independent and enjoy their last days.

Over the years they have evolved into a close family unit, watching out for each other and keeping each other company.

Many of the residents, who are all aged 70 or above, live alone in their bedsits, while four married couples live in one-bedroom flats.

Anne Gething, 85, moved to Roxburgh House two years ago. She said: "We just don't know what is going to happen and the uncertainty is just causing us all worry.

"We've been told demolition is one of the options but we don't want that.

Most of us moved here thinking that we would die here.

"We are such a close-knit family here and we want to all stay together. We also have everything we need here to live independent lives, with shops near by and many of us came here because we have family just up the road.

"We've decided it's time we took action and fought for our rights to keep our homes. We shouldn't have to deal with this at our time of life."

Debbie Down from Wessex Housing Partnership, of which HVHA is part, insisted that no decisions had been made but demolition is a possibility.

She said: "The next board meeting is in July and Roxburgh House is on the agenda to discuss its future but it is not certain that a decision will be made then."
