ROADWORKS that will see 30 new traffic lights on a busy roundabout are vital to save lives, it has been claimed.

Council bosses defending the controversial works, which started yesterday, say they estimate there is around one crash a week on the dangerous Millbrook Roundabout, pictured.

They claim it is essential for public safety that the £2m plans to install 30 traffic lights, new crossings and resurfacing work on Millbrook Roundabout and Dock Gate 20 is carried out immediately.

Southampton City Council public realm manager John Harvey said that in the past three years there have been 17 crashes in which those involved have needed hospital treatment.

He said: "These works will save lives. There is no question that putting traffic lights on this roundabout will reduce the number of accidents."

He added: "We would not take the decision to conduct road works on a key corridor into the city lightly but we have to balance the needs of road users with public safety."

It is feared the work could cause delays for up to four months.

Head of highways and parking Mick Bishop said: "It is essential that this important artery into the city is maintained.

"This part of Southampton City Council's biggest-ever spend into improving the city's road network."

There are expected to be some delays on surrounding roads over the next few weeks.

The council is advising motorists to allow more time for journeys, to avoid travelling at peak times and use public transport if possible.
