A WOMAN who played the bagpipes in a Hampshire village following the Queen's death has staged a repeat performance in London.

Carol Knights, of Hamble, spent about an hour playing a selection of tunes in Green Park, where people were laying flowers.

Carol is a member of St Andrew's Pipe Band, who will be playing a Hamble Quay on Monday following the Queen's funeral.

The 55-year-old was on her way to Derby when she stopped off in London and headed for Green Park, which is next to Buckingham Palace.

People laying flowers in memory of the Queen stopped to listen as she played Amazing Grace and other tunes.

Carol said: "It was lovely - so many people stopped and chatted, including a couple who originated from Warsash."

As reported in the Daily Echo, Carol took to the streets of Hamble after the Queen's death was announced on September 8.

She had talked about the Queen's health earlier that day, saying she wanted to do something to mark the monarch's passing when the time came.

Hours later, following the announcement by Buckingham Palace, she put that idea into practice, filling the village streets with her music.

Several people filmed the moment and posted it on social media, describing it as "poignant".

Speaking at the time she said: "I knew the Queen loved the bagpipes. So I came home and got dressed and decided to walk around the streets of Hamble.

"A lot of people came to their doors."

Carol spent more than an hour playing the bagpipes, an instrument she started playing just five years ago.

"It gave people something to focus on. I'm just pleased that I kind of managed to do something that captured the moment," she said.

"I think we have to respect the fact that the Queen devoted her entire adult life to the service of others. She did that with dignity, grace and humour."

Members of St Andrew's Pipe Band are set to play at Hamble Quay at 6pm today.
