A ROW has broken out over a lime tree outside a former council house.

The owners currently have to ask permission from Southampton City Council every time they want to prune it.

But the council wants to go one step further and impose a permanent tree preservation order on the tree.

The authority says it is under possible threat after being cut back in 2021 without authorisation.

Now the owners have objected to the TPO - arguing the tree's sap causes damage to their car roof and property.

They also say the leaves, block gutterings and are a hazard for pedestrians.

In an objection published online, they added: "We therefore feel we need to be trusted to maintain and be responsible for the upkeep of the tree to avoid the above."

The council has said the owners can apply to do work in future.

A tree officer added: "The presence of a Tree Preservation Order does not mean that no work can be carried out to the tree.

"Only that consent must be obtained prior to the work being carried out.

"This is similar to the current situation but makes the status clearer to ensure the long-term retention of this tree for future generations.

"The council has agreed tree work before and would be supportive of reasonable works in the future."

The issue is due to be discussed at the Planning and Rights of Way Panel on Tuesday.
