EGGS from caged hens have been given the thumbs down by Hampshire's council chiefs.
The county council was one of 15 UK organisations including Cadbury's and The National Trust named as Good Eggs' in an awards ceremony held by animal welfare group Compassion in World Farming.
It has committed to stop using eggs from caged hens - one of five local authorities nationwide to do so.
The policy includes residential units, social services, staff catering and all schools in the area.
Rowen West-Henzell of Compassion in World Farming said: "At this year's Good Egg Awards we wanted to celebrate councils who have decided to show leadership on this crucial welfare issue."
Hampshire County Council executive member for economic development, Cllr Michael Woodhall, commented: "This really highlights the importance we place on providing sustainable, healthy school meals and supporting the rural economy."
Fluffetts Farm in Fordingbridge will supply the county council with more than 600,000 eggs each year.
