PLANS to open a new late-night alcohol retailer in an area that has trouble with "small gangs" is being opposed by residents.
As reported, the applicant, Anton Croos, has asked the council for permission to turn the vacant store in Alfriston Gardens, Sholing, into a new convenience store that would sell alcohol from 6am to midnight every day of the week.
Mr Croos told the council that he would install CCTV, keep a record of staff training, and log all alcohol sale refusals in a diary.
However, for some residents, the measures are not enough, and calls have been made to refuse the application.

Nearby business owner Laura Hunt, from Headhunters Hair Salon, has already objected.
Jackie Henshall, who lives a road away from the proposed store, in Silver Birch Close, said: “We are experiencing a lot of anti-social behaviour and drug-related problems in the vicinity and I feel very strongly that selling alcohol this late at night will only make the problem so much worse.”
Another objector, Carmen Pearcy and her husband John Pearcy, who also live a road away on Effingham Gardens, said: “We already have had trouble with youths buying and selling drugs from the back of this arcade of shops so we certainly do not need any more hassle from another shop selling alcohol (seven) days a week, 18 hours a day.”
Anne Caplen, who lives just 50 metres away said that the development could ‘encourage groups and gangs to congregate again’.
Ms Caplen pleaded with the council and said: “I strongly object to this alcohol sales shop being granted. I have lived here for 20 years and have experienced trouble with youths/ small gangs etc congregating outside these shops.
“Selling alcohol here seven days a week 18 hours a day is horrendous. This is a residential area and will encourage groups and gangs to congregate again.
“Please do not let this happen.”
The council is due to make a decision on the licence today.
