A LUNCHEON to raise money for Ukrainian refugees has attracted famous names to Southampton.
The event to support Ukrainian families settling in the city attracted recognisable names to the waterside restaurant Figurati, in Ocean Village.
Work donated by various artists was auctioned and the proceeds will be given to the Ukrainian Refugee Fund.
Sherry Claridge, organised the event on Thursday to support refugees fleeing Ukraine with the hope of raising £3,000.
Sherry said: “I’m trying to give back and help the community especially affected by the war, and we have so many refugees locally, so I want to help families and people.
“We would like them to settle into the city, we can help by providing accommodation, or help children by providing books, clothes, and toys.”
Southampton’s own Michael Kurn, 32, sports presenter and broadcaster, and Hayley Palmer, 41, host of Friday Night with Hayley Palmer on Sky TV, presented the event.
They spoke to the Daily Echo about the importance of coming together and supporting the cause.
Michael said: “It’s something that is affecting a lot of people and it’s in the media every single day, we’ve got businesses who are supporting this so it’s going to be a good day.
“It just puts into perspective that outside factors can have such an impact on your life and these people just lost their homes, and the fact there are people in the world who are prepared to open their doors and welcome them in it’s just incredible.”
Hayley said: “I like to support Sherry every year I’m originally from Fareham and I started my career here and it’s great to be back from London to support an event like this.
“It’s wonderful, especially after what everyone has gone through for people to come together and unite for a really important cause.
“It’s something that needs to be addressed more, that’s why it’s important that Sherry does this.”
The event has happened for eight years for different causes with the Mayor of Southampton and the leader of Southampton City Council attending in 2021.
