CUSTOMERS of a Southampton pub which has been put up for sale have shared their sadness at the news.

Yesterday it was announced that The Admiral Sir Lucius Curtis on Canute's Pavilion is set to be sold.

It is one of 32 sites owned by JD Wetherspoon up and down the country that are set to close down.

Punters in the city have spoken of their disappointment at the news.

Some said they often visited the pub before Saints games, whilst others said the sale would be a loss due to its proximity to university accommodation.

Some even called it "the best Spoons in town".

Reader, Jamie William, commented on the Echo's Facebook page saying: "RIP Spoons. Good memories in there from my time at uni, it was 100 yards from halls."

Karl Fletcher said: "This is sad, Gona (sic) have to find a new place to go before football."

But others have welcomed the closure arguing it is not a loss due to the number of other Wetherspoon sites in the area.

Chris Zardis said: "It's a great building, could be put to much greater use than a Wetherspoons!

"This is good news for local pubs in Southampton, the fewer the Spoons the better for the local economy."

The boozer is named after the Admiral of the Fleet Sir Lucius Curtis, who was a senior officer in the Royal Navy in the 19th century.

Another reader, Catherine Edbrook, said: "That’s very sad. I love going in that pub and our boy loves the food and atmosphere."

Graham Weavers commented: "Was in there a few weeks ago and it was heaving. Can't understand them selling it tbh."

John Watkins added that it is the "best spoons in town", an opinion echoed by Pete Daniel who said: "Probably the best Spoons in Southampton".

Due to the site's proximity to St Mary's, many Saints fans have been left saddened by the news.

Julie Clark said: "Oh no! Where will all the football fans go before and after a match? I hope all the staff get redeployed."

Stephen Geddes added: "Now where are we going to go for a pre-match pint if this is true?"

The pub giant, which operates 800 sites across the UK, said the sale is a "commercial decision".
