CALLS have been made for a Southampton strip club to be refused a new licence due to concerns over its opening hours.

Playhouse Basement in London Road has applied to renew its sexual entertainment venue licence.

The licence proposes no changes to how the business operates and the times in which it stays open.

But now concerns have been raised over the disruption that the business is said to cause to residential properties in the area.

One objector said: "Since the first granting of the licence the road has become more residential, flats next door to the club and three floors added to a block at the corner of London Road and Bellevue Road and a block behind the club in Waterloo Terrace.

"The nearby area is proven to be overwhelmingly residential."

The company is currently allowed to operate between the hours of 7pm and 5am each day and to sell alcohol from 10pm until 4.30am.

It has been operating underneath this licence since July 15, 2021 but now must apply for a renewal after the agreement came to an end on August 27 this year.

Another objection to the application read: "The proposed venue is seeking hours until 5am.

"This will only provide a venue for late-night drinking, once other venues have closed.

"The company also encourages groups through their stag package offerings for groups of up to 20.

"Once these patrons leave the venue, it is very likely for them to roam around the locality upon their walk to local hotels, causing further anti-social behaviour and public order offences in the area."

The previous application for the site said entry to the club would be controlled by a high door charge, or by online booking.

The basement floor area is also said to be fully noise-insulated and extends beneath units 35-41 London Road.

At the ground floor the site comprises a stairway to the basement and floorspace previously operated as a cafe.

It was run under the name Kiss Nightclub until 2018.
