DOORSTEP scammers have been reported in the Hythe area.

A man has been walking around Hythe with a large rucksack trying to sell items at doors.

There has been another report of a man trying to get into a home by saying that he needed to fix a leak which did not exist.

Police are warning residents to be cautious when someone knocks at your door when you do not know them and when you are not expecting anyone.

But police say there is no need to fear a door knock as most will be legitimate, but it can also be used by criminals to gain acccess or scam you.

Police advise some simple steps to remain safe and vigilant.

Do not let anyone inside your home unless you are expecting them.

Use a door chain if you are home alone, or talk to the person at the door through the door or window until you can verify who they are.

If someone has no reason to be knocking at your door, do not feel the need to engage with them or open the door.

Keep all doors locked during the day, even when you are home.

Police say there is always a way to verify if a visitor is legitimate, and if it doesn't seem right then it often isn't.

Report suspicious incidents to 101 or by the website enquiry form on the Hampshire Constabulary website, as it helps police build an intelligence picture of local issues.

Call 999 if someone is at the door and trying to coerce you into letting them inside and you fear they intend to commit a crime.
