COMMUNITIES across Southampton are coming together to celebrate an annual Hindu festival.

Durga Puja is an Indian festival which celebrates and pays homage to the Hindu goddess Durga and her victory over a demon known as Mahishasur.

The three-day festival celebrates the victory of good over evil.

Families and friends are gathering at the Hiltingbury Community Centre in Chandler's Ford to keep the traditions and festivities alive.

Organised by the Hampshire Puja and Cultural Association (HPCA), the hall has been decorated with statues of Indian gods and goddesses, and worshippers decorated the venue with colourful flowers and rangoli.

Festival-goer Krishnan Kundu said: "I am a long-time member of the Hampshire Puja and cultural association. I have seen the fantastic evolution and growth of this society over the years.

"This puja is an annual event and is all about bringing people together.

"People often get busy with their lives, and events like these give us all a chance to get together.

"It also helps us pass on our cultural values to our children.

"It is a fantastic atmosphere here and we would love to see more people come and enjoy the food and the entertainment."

HPCA treasurer, Tonmay Kumar, said: "We are expecting over 1,200 people to come to our three-day event, and there will be food and drinks for everyone over this period.

"We belong to a generation of people who come from India, whether first generation or second, and we want to bring whatever cultural and traditional values we have to Southampton so our children can learn about the culture.

"It's not all about learning; it's also about understanding what their parents' heritage is.

"It feels great to see so many people come to our puja."

During this festival, the local Indian group will start each day by feeding the homeless and hosting community lunches.

The event also features musical games, dance, singing, and drama performances.

There is also a play area to keep kids busy and entertained.

The festival runs until Sunday, October 2 from 11.30am until 5pm.
