It never ceases to amaze me the many stupid proposals these councillors concoct, and once again we have yet another proposal to cause vehicle disruption, this time in Portswood as highlighted by Labour Councillor Eamonn Keogh.

This hair-brain decision is once again purely designed for the student fraternity, the traffic chaos this will cause stretching way back through Lodge Road especially at school times.

There is the added problem of drivers who are strangers to Southampton having to be redirected down Westridge Road, then there are the parking problems this will add to.

Will Waitrose and Sainsbury’s allow visitors to Portswood to use their car parks, especially old age pensioners who can just about walk that distance, let alone carry shopping.

I feel sorry for the many shops that are suffering under the present monetary climate, especially the many charity shops that will suffer.

I remember not so long ago another hair brain liberal council did the same in Eastleigh. They closed one of the roads under the illusion of creating a greener environment. Many shops suffered, some of which closed down never to return, all because of lack of trade, resulting in councillors reopening the road again.

Already there are a few boarded-up premises in Portswood, this hair brain scheme will add many more. With the traffic chaos and the complete lack of a duty of care to the elderly, Portswood will become another derelict dump.

While we’re on the subject of driving people onto the buses, this city council still refuses to allocate park and ride facilities outside of the city.

Surely that should be a priority for a greener environment not only for Portswood but for the whole city.
