A MAJOR city road will be closed overnight for more than four weeks tonight.

Bitterne Road West will be closed to motorists and residents from 8pm to 6am from Tuesday, October 4, until Friday, November 4.

The road closure is to allow for the carriageway to be resurfaced and to raise the manhole covers.

Work will take place between the junction of Bullar Road to outside property number 189 and includes the junction of Cobbett Road and Bitterne Road West.

Motorists have been urged to plan ahead and to prepare for delays, although there will be a signed diversion route.

This is what you can expect

Week one

Work will start on the westbound carriageway from 8pm on Tuesday and the road will be closed overnight.

The road will be partially reopened by 6am on October 5, with a single lane closure in place, to enable workers to “safely and efficiently excavate the road surface and lay the concrete.”

This lane closure will remain in place to allow the newly laid concrete time to set.

For residents who live in Bitterne Road West, it will not be possible to have vehicular access to your property from 8pm to 6am from October 4 to October 12 while these works are underway.

Week two

This will be followed by further overnight works to resurface the carriageway on Thursday, October 13 and Friday, October 14, from 8pm to 6am.

Residents will be unable to access their property during this time.

Work will then begin on the opposite carriageway.

Week three and four

Work will resume on the western carriageway overnight from October 24 to November 4.

However, residents will be able to reach their front door thanks to a manned entrance to the road via Chessel Crescent.

Work to add a “specialised high friction surface” to areas of the road will also be undertaken and more information will be shared about this nearer the time.

In a letter to residents, a spokesperson from Southampton Highways Partnership said: “We acknowledge that these essential works will impact you, especially as there is limited parking in the surrounding areas.

“These works are essential to ensure that this busy arterial route is fit for purpose. We would like to take this opportunity to apologise for the inconvenience that this reconstruction work will cause.

“The works continuing after this work will only affect your access during our night working hours, 8pm to 6am.”
