The work by Southern Water is due to begin at 8pm this evening on Portland Terrace between the Civic Centre and the Marlands entrance.
A one-way closure will be put in place heading southbound.
The pedestrian crossing nearby will be "maintained throughout" according to Southampton City Council's highways team.
