A SCHOOL where students are "not always taught the right knowledge" has been downgraded by education watchdogs.

Burley Primary School in Ringwood has dropped from a 'good' rating to 'requires improvement' following it's most recent Ofsted inspection on June 21 and 22.

The Church Lane school had three out of five categories - behaviour and attitudes, personal development, and leadership and management - rated 'good'.

But the remaining categories - the quality of education and early years provisions - were rated 'requires improvement'.

Inspectors found that "teachers are not always clear about the essential knowledge pupils should learn or the precise order they should learn it in".

The report says that pupils "miss opportunities to consolidate their learning", adding that " misconceptions are not picked up before learning moves on".

Inspectors noted that children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) are supported by leaders, but staff do not always plan and structure activities that "help pupils learn well enough".

Headteacher Mrs Allies said: "I would like to draw your attention to the many positives in the report.

"Given our consistent record of ‘Good’ inspections previously, we are understandably disappointed by this latest outcome.

"We are, however, pleased to note the many positive aspects highlighted in the report; amongst these, that children enjoy being in school and have access to a wide range of opportunities across the school calendar.

"Furthermore, the Inspector found children to be secure and well cared for and observed that staff are quick to identify, and meet the needs of, children who require additional support.

"We respect the overall findings of the report and are determined to address the challenges raised, working closely alongside the local authority.

"All staff fully understand the key priorities that have been identified and a clear plan is in place to action these.

"Indeed, work is already underway to refine our curriculum and streamline our assessment systems.

"We are continuing to keep parents informed about this ongoing work and remain committed to doing all we can to rapidly turn around the current rating. I’d like to thank all of our families for their continued support.”
