A SIKH community is serving up free food to residents in Southampton.

A team of volunteers at Gurdwara Nanaksar Southampton, on Peterborough Road, prepare hot food seven days a week in their community kitchen, known as Langar.

The food is free but donations of any amount are appreciated.

The kitchen is open to anyone in the community as long as you cover your head, remove your shoes, and are not under the influence of alcohol.

Volunteers arrive every morning at 6am to prepare the food, which is severed all day.

He explained: "Everybody who comes here will be equally served, everyone will welcome you in the Gurdwara.

"If you go upstairs you can see our holy scripture called Guru Granth Sahib, where you can pay respect.

"You can stay as long as you like, you can eat, you can sit, you can listen.

"There is no obligation at all."

He added: "We know that prices are going up but still here we offer free kitchen. We will not ask for any money, you do not have to give any penny."

The kitchen is run completely by volunteers who cook and serve food and wash the dishes.

General Secretary Harjap Singh said that there are lots of people coming from different countries to Southampton, particularly students.

He said the Gurdwara is a place they can seek sanctuary.

"We have no other income," he explained.

"It is just the people who contribute towards Langar. Our religion is that you earn and share with others and this is really in practice.

"Sikhism is a religion of equality, justice and peace. We do this so people can come and not go hungry.

"I think all faiths should join together. With this high cost of living some cannot make ends meet.

"We should all come together to help them."
