A SOUTHAMPTON runner was among hundreds who helped the British Heart Foundation raise nearly £2 million from this year's London Marathon.

Harry Green completed the event in 3 hours 59 minutes and has so far raised an incredible £3,700.

The 31-year-old took on the iconic challenge in memory of his grandfather, also called Harry, who sadly died after a cardiac arrest. Harry’s dad, Christopher, had a heart attack in his mid-40s but thankfully survived and as a result, Harry says the work of the BHF is so important to all his family.

He said: “Taking part was such a huge challenge and an incredible experience. The atmosphere on the day was electric and I am proud to know that by doing this, I’ve helped to raise vital funds for pioneering research into regenerative medicine, including the development of the Heart Healing Patch."

Funds raised at this year’s TCS London Marathon will go towards cutting-edge research into regenerative medicine, including Prof Sanjay Sinha’s heart healing patch which is stem cell patches of real beating heart tissue that could be applied to damaged areas of the heart so the heart can function as it should.

Dr Charmaine Griffiths, Chief Executive at the British Heart Foundation, added: "It was a truly heart-warming and inspirational day cheering on Harry and all our team."
