POLICE have carried out extra patrols on the Northam Estate in Southampton as part of a campaign to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour.

Officers have taken to social media to reassure anyone left feeling anxious after witnessing an increased police presence on the estate.

One of the officers involved said: "There was concern and worry from residents who aren’t used to seeing police walking around in numbers.

"For those my team and I didn’t get to speak to, I would like to explain.

"Operation Essence is designed to target areas that have increased reports of ASB and/or crime by putting as many officers as we can on foot, walking the beat for as long as we can before getting called away.

"The dream is to go back to having officers walking around every day so that seeing police is no longer a concern but more of a usual and reassuring occurrence.

"Officers are keen to engage with local residents explain why we are wandering around and love to be approached to discuss issues in their area.

"We have been very fortunate this evening to be joined by members of Southampton City Councils Community Safety Team who are dedicated to assisting communities with ASB.

"We are looking forward to working more closely with the local council teams in future.

"On this occasion a number of knives were located (nothing to suggest they were involved in crime) and will be destroyed, lots of miles walked and lots smiling residents.

"The intention was to continue with another area this evening but the above-mentioned ‘getting called away’ has happened.

"I would urge that any residents in any areas of Southampton report ASB in their area via 101 or online reporting.

"101 is often overwhelmed but online reporting is quick and easy and will get to the right place.

"One report may not get a response from us, two may not either. But as the residents report, a picture builds and we know where to go with the officers that we have."
