PLANS for a new 5G pylon in a Southampton neighbourhood have been strongly criticised by residents.

Locals in the Sholing area objected to plans for a new 15m mast saying it would pose a distraction to drivers and be an "eye sore".

Under the proposed plans, cabinets would also be placed beside the mast on Butts Road near its junction with Portsmouth Road.

One resident said the proposals would create an “eye sore planted in front of [nearby] houses” adding that it would lead to properties being devalued.

Another resident simply said the proposal was "ludicrous".

A third resident even suggested alternative locations for the mast to be placed in such as the inner grounds of St Mary’s Cemetery or Butts Road recreational grounds.

The plans, lodged by Clarke Telecom, are awaiting a decision and residents have been told to submit any feedback by October 21.
