THE leader of Southampton City Council has slammed the government after the Prime Minister's resignation saying Sotonians are "paying the heavy price".

Cllr Satvir Kaur made the comments after Liz Truss resigned just under two months into her premiership, making her the shortest-serving PM in UK history.

Mrs Truss became Prime Minister on September 6 after defeating Rishi Sunak in the Conservative leadership contest.

But now she has announced her resignation, Cllr Kaur has said the country is in "chaos" whilst calling for a general election.

The Southampton Labour leader told the Echo: "The country is in chaos with the Tories lurching from one crisis to another; individuals and families in Southampton are sadly paying the heavy price for this Conservative incompetence.

"This mess has been created by the Conservatives, so changing to yet another Conservative Prime Minister isn't going to solve the problem.

"Conservatives need to stop pretending this is not having lasting damage to our local communities, stop putting their party loyalties before the country and urgently call for a general election.

"People have had enough. We all desperately need stability, competence and leadership. It's clear the Conservatives cannot deliver this."
