A SECTION of a major road is to close for six weeks as works are carried out.

The junction of Thomas Lewis Way and Mayfield Road is set to be improved and upgraded from November 7.

This area will be closed to motorists for six weeks while the changes are made.

The work, completed by Balfour Beatty, will be carried out in two phases.

However, it will not coincide with the recent works on St Denys Road and Thomas Lewis Way which are due to finish on October 28.

Here’s what you can expect.

The first phase

From Monday, November 7 work will start at 7.30am and run until 5pm and it will include:

  • Clearing vegetation to enable the widening of the junction
  • Upgrading the traffic lights to intelligent lights. These will be able to detect traffic flows quicker and assist traffic entering and exiting the city.
  • Alongside this new drainage and solar-powered, illuminated bollards will be installed.

Temporary traffic lights will be in place on Thomas Lewis Way during these works along with the road closure at the junction of Mayfield Road.

According to Southampton City Council, this is to ensure “the safety of vehicles and our workforce and to enable the work to take place.”

It is likely that during peak times drivers will experience a delay.

The second phase will include:

  • The resurfacing of the area, but due to the high volumes of traffic in the area this will be carried out overnight for three nights from 9.30pm to 6.00am starting on Wednesday, December 14.

During this time Thomas Lewis Way will be closed in both directions from the junction of Stoneham Way and Thomas Lewis Way to the junction of Thomas Lewis Way and St Denys Road.

A spokesperson from the council said: “Elements of these works are weather dependant, and should we experience bad weather conditions we may need to postpone the work.

“We understand that these works may be disruptive, we would like to apologise in advance for this.
