A GROUP of children in Southampton were reportedly given the wrong Covid jab at a clinic in the city.
Thirty-six children, aged between five and 11, received a higher dose of the Covid vaccine, the BBC reports.
They were vaccinated at Start Point in Sholing on Wednesday.
Children between five and 11 are eligible for two doses of the Pfizer/BioNTech jab but each dose should only be one third of the dose given to older children and adults.
In a statement to the BBC, the chief medical officer of Solent NHS Trust apologised for the mistake and confirmed an investigation has now been launched.
Dr Dan Baylis said: "We are very sorry this error occurred and we have contacted the parents of the children involved to apologise for the mistake and share support and guidance should their child experience any mild side effects such as tiredness or a headache.
"We want to reassure everyone this is an isolated occurrence, which we are taking very seriously, and a thorough investigation is underway so that we learn from this and ensure it does not happen again."
Children who received a higher dose should be monitored for 48 hours, the statement added.
Solent NHS Trust has been contacted by the Daily Echo for comment.
